The Optical Factor has a wealth of experience when it comes to testing your eyes – and we hope to make your experience an enjoyable one.

We will check to see if you need spectacles, how strong they need to be and  also check the health of your eyes inside and out before then discussing our findings with you.

Types of eye conditions

Short-sightedness (Myopia)

Where things in the distance look blurred, such as the television screen or when you're driving.

Long-sightedness (Hypermetropia)

Where your eyes have to focus and work hard to see things clearly, which can lead to eyestrain, especially if you do a lot of closework.

Astigmatism

Where the front of your eye is shaped like a rugby ball rather than a football, which means that there are different amounts of long or short-sighted in each main direction. It is very common. And most prescriptions have a small amount of astigmatism.

Presbyopia

Where you begin to need specs for reading and close-up vision, usually around the age of forty.

Eye Health Check

An important part of the eye examination is the health check of your eyes. This involves examination with a slit-lamp and/or ophthalmoscope and sometimes assessment of your visual fields, depth perception and colour vision.

Sometimes we want to use dilating eye-drops, and in fact do this routinely for people aged 60 and over, to enlarge your pupils so we can have a really good look at the back of your eyes. You cannot drive for several hours afterwards- but it’s a really worthwhile test.

These are only some of the tests we do when you come in for an eye examination as it depends on what symptoms you are having and what visual tasks your eyes do every day.

If you are worried about your eyes or have any concerns about your vision you do not have to wait the recommended period and can make an appointment and the optometrists at The Optical Factor will be happy to see you.
